Richmond Neighborhoods

The city of Richmond Virginia is divided into many different subdivisions and neighborhoods. A few of the most popular are as follows:

Richmond Neighborhoods

Byrd Park is located at the far westernmost area of Richmond and is bordered by both Byrd Park (obviously) and Maymont Park along the southern edge, and by the Downtown Expressway along the north side, and along its eastern edge by Boat Lake, Swan Lake, and Shields Lake. Home styles in this area are quite eclectic and include row houses that were constructed originally in the 1920s, 2 story frame bungalows, brick Colonials, Cape Cods, ranch homes, and even some tri-levels can also be found.

Carver is also known as Sheep Hill and is located north of Broad Street west of Jackson Ward & the rest of Downtown Richmond. Many of the older houses have undergone a tremendous amount of revitalization and is home to Virginia Commonwealth University.

Richmond VA Neighborhoods

Carytown / Museum District is a mixed use area that includes both residential and commercial property uses including shops, cafes & restaurants. Many of the homes in this area were built in the 1920s. This area is located west of the Fan district.

Church Hill is a historic district and is noted for such recognizable points in history including being where Patrick Henry gave his “Give me liberty or give me death” speech at St. John’s Church. Church Hill features pristine examples of 19th century architecture and as such is a very popular community for enthusiasts of that genre.

Richmond Subdivisions

Court End is north of the Capitol Square & East Broad Street. This area features many prime examples of early American Federal architecture in downtown Richmond.

East End is located, not surprisingly, along the eastern side of Richmond Virginia. It is approximately defined as the region north of the James River, east/NE of the Virginia Central Railroad: Chesapeake & Ohio Railway line and south & west of I-295. The most popular neighborhoods in the East End include: Church Hill, Fairmount, Union Hill, Fulton, Fulton Hill, Montrose Heights, Fairfield Court, Creighton Court, Whitcomb Court, Mosby Court, Eastview, Brauers, Peter Paul, Woodville, North Church Hill, Chimborazo & Oakwood. East End also includes the bulk of Henrico County & Hanover County since it lies in the Richmond metropolitan area.

North Side is located along the northern edge of Richmond, and includes many unique homes and neighborhoods. Some of the most popular include Barton Heights, Bellevue, Ginter Park, Hermitage Road, Highland Park, and Sherwood Park. Home styles within these areas include Arts & Craft bungalows, Victorian, Romanesque Revival, as well as Queen Anne.

The River District is what is referenced to include the majority of the downtown Richmond areas along the James River.

Shockoe Bottom and Shockoe Slip are very popular areas for downtown night life and includes many restaurants, entertainment and even offices. This area has been completely revitalized and is a popular place to visit for both tourists and locals alike.

Union Hill is among the oldest & most important historically neighborhoods in all of Richmond. It features tremendous older homes that have been preserved & restored and has been designated on the National Register of Historic Places. Upscale homes are the norm for this very popular community.

Westover Hills is one of the most popular neighborhoods in Richmond. Westover Hills is located south of the James River along State Route 161 crosses Boulevard Bridge from the Fan District. Geographically speaking, Westover Hills is the center of Richmond VA. Homes in this community were primarily built in the 1920s to 1940s. Architectural styles are diverse and include Cape Cod, Spanish Colonial, Tudor Revival, farmhouse, and Arts & Crafts. Homes in this area sport larger lots and feature tremendous views overlooking the James River. Included in this area is also some of the more popular restaurants, and other businesses.
